Hooked on a Feeling

Those of you who follow the ThinkBlueLA forum and blog site regularly know that I have been saying for the past two seasons that 2013 is going to be the year of the Dodgers. And while nothing has changed in that regard (except that the outlook is even brighter now), I am going the extra mile to watch this historical season happen; in fact, I’m actually going an extra 2,800 miles to watch it happen.

I just booked a flight to New York to spend a week with my daughter, who lives in Brooklyn, and it just so happens that I will be there the exact same week that the Dodgers will be in the Big Apple to take on the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Man, what a coincidence, right? I mean, what are the chances of that happening?

It's hard to believe that in their 130-year history, the Dodgers have never played a regular series at Yankee Stadium - old or new. (Photo courtesy of stadiumtravelguide.com)

It’s pretty safe to say that both games between the Dodgers and Yankees at Yankee Stadium this summer will be sell-outs. (Photo courtesy of stadiumtravelguide.com)

If you had told me that the Dodgers have never played a regular season game against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium since it opened in 1923 or since interleague play began in 1997, I would have bet you otherwise and, of course, I would have lost that bet. That Dodgers have, however, played quite a few World Series games in The House That Ruth Built – the last of which was on October 28, 1981 in game-6 of the 1981 World Series and we all know how that one ended.

Pedro Guerrero had five RBIs in Game-6 of the 1981 World Series, which helped him become tri-MVPs with Ron Cey and Steve Yeager.

Pedro Guerrero went 3 for 5 with a triple, a home run and five RBIs in Game-6 of the 1981 World Series. He joined Ron Cey and Steve Yeager to become the first-ever World Series Tri-MVPs.

The two-game series at Yankee Stadium will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 18 and 19, with both games having a scheduled 7:05 PM (ET) start time. It will be a butt-kicker for the Dodgers, as they head to San Diego immediately following Wednesday night’s game to begin a four-game series against the Padres on Thursday night, June 20. The Dodgers then return home to face the hated Giants for three games beginning on Monday, June 24.

Although individual game tickets for the Yankees will not go on sale through their official website until after the first of the year, I was able to get some really good seats for the Dodgers/Yankees series at a decent price through TicketsNow.com, a very reputable ticket broker that works with TicketMaster. Of course, you can always wait to get your tickets on-line through the Yankees website (which also uses TicketMaster), but I have a very strong suspicion that these two games will sell out very quickly, just as they did at Dodger Stadium when the Yankees came to town for a three-game series in 2010. (You remember that series, don’t you? It marked the beginning of the end for Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton when he blew a 6-2 lead in the top of the 9th of the rubber game of the series, allowing 5 consecutive batters to reach base. I still have nightmares about that game).

And speaking of the Yankees at Dodger Stadium, if you can’t make it to New York, the Yankees will be at the Ravine on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 30 and 31 for yet another two-game series. The Boston Red Sox will also be making an appearance at Dodger Stadium this season on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 23, 24 and 25.

I know of several Dodger Stadium regulars who will be making the trip to New York and I imagine that there will be many others, so you can rest assured that there will be a lot of Dodger Blue in the stands at Yankee Stadium.

By the way – the round trip airfare from LAX to JFK was considerably lower that I had anticipated, but I have to believe that it will probably go up in the coming weeks.

Needless to say, if the Dodgers hope to make it into the post-season in 2013 (which I absolutely believe that they will), they are going to have to go through some pretty stiff interleague competition to get there.

No problem…

Those are two games I’d like to see in person. I just know I’ll be there.

I’m looking forward to those games. The last time I saw the Dodgers play at Yankee Stadium was the 1978 WS. I was at all three games and the Dodgers lost all three games. I think the results will be different this time around.

BTW, you said both games will start 1:05 PM (ET). I checked both the Dodger and Yankee website and they have both games starting at 7:05 PM (ET). Check it out.

You are correct, Will. I went by the calendar on the Dodgers website which shows 4:05 PM (PT) start time for both and I adjusted the wrong way (I never even looked at the Yankees calendar).

This makes that flight to San Diego even worse. Even though they will pick up three hours on the flight west, they still won’t arrive in San Diego until well after midnight. (Too bad that Monday off-day isn’t on Thursday instead). I really don’t understand why Wednesday’s game isn’t a day game – that’s just nonsense.

Thanks for the correction, which has been noted in the article.

They could still change the start time to a day as it gets closer to June. Especially if the players union gets involved.

I really do not see how they cannot make the Wednesday game a day game, but you know how screwy the MLB can be. It’s all about TV and the money.

Sounds like a lot of fun!!

Ahhhh Ron you got me all excited about the games in New York. Now I’m bugging my wife to see about going out there. I just want the season to start. We are all anticipating the same thing. It’s kinda nice to have met you all who think Dodgers and baseball 24/7. You all are a bunch of great fans.
