Vin Scully to call games from Australia

Those of us who are frustrated that the Dodgers will be kicking off their 2014 season well out of our reach (geographically and financially) in Australia on March 22 and 23 got a bit of good news on Thursday morning – great news, in fact.

Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully, the voice of the Dodgers for 65 consecutive seasons, has agreed to broadcast the two SNLA-televised games from Sydney.

Although coverage of the games will begin at 7:00 PM on Saturday, March 22 and 1:00 PM on Sunday, March 23 local time, they will air at 1:00 AM and 7:00 PM respectively on Saturday, March 22 in Los Angeles due to the 19-hour time difference.

Granted, staying up for a three+ hour baseball game (complete with the newly expanded video replay system in effect) is something that only the hardiest of Dodger fans will do, but their efforts will be graciously rewarded by the soothing voice and incredible stories from ‘the best there ever was’ calling the games.

And while there may be some scratching their heads asking why Vin will travel to Sydney, Australia to call games yet he won’t travel to Denver to do so, ask yourself this question – If you had the opportunity to travel to Australia with travel, lodging and all other expenses covered by the Dodgers, wouldn’t you go on this once-in-a-lifetime trip? (I’m also thinking that Vin’s lovely wife Sandi may have had a say in the matter since the two are almost inseparable).

It’s now a pretty safe bet that those who were previously considering not staying up to watch the first of these two historic games from half a world away will now most likely do so.

After all, it is Vin Scully.

Now you West Coasters get a taste of what us Easteners go through to hear and see the games live form LA, SF, etc. It may be even later for you, but it’s only 2 games, and we’ll need to watch at 4 AM for the first game. By the way, I’m hoping that the new network will not affect our ability to watch the games on mlb.tv. Anybody have any info on that?

Nothing confirmed, Dick, but there is no way MLB.com would not cover Dodger games – too many MLB.TV subscriptions at stake = a LOT of $$.

Vin Scully broadcasting from down under – Amen to that.

I’m going to try to catch the second game, if possible, since it will be played at 10:00PM east coast time. The usual starting time for a night game.

Frustrated that the Dodgers are starting the season in Australia is an understatement on my part. As you know Ron, this is the whole reason I will not be taking part in ST this year! (well that and the fact Curt doesn’t get Spring Break until March 17) But yes getting to hear Vin call the games does lessen the blow for me!
