Reddick, Pederson bring missing element to Dodgers offense

After a painfully slow start following his August 1 acquisition by the Dodgers, right fielder Josh Reddick finally found his stroke; good enough to finish the regular with a slash-line of .258 / .307 / .335 / .643, two home runs and nine RBIs in his 167 plate appearances with his new club. But flying well under the radar were the three bases he stole in his 47 games with the Dodgers.

On Tuesday night in Game-3 of the 2016 National League Championship Series, the 29-year-old Savannah, Georgia native became the first Dodger to steal multiple bases in a postseason game since Steve Sax stole three bases in Game-4 of the 1988 NLCS. Reddick did so after reaching first base on an infield single off of Cubs ace Jake Arrieta in the bottom of the fourth inning. He then easily stole second and third off of the Cubs right-hander and would eventually score on Yasmani Grandal’s two-run home run to right-center field to give the Dodgers a (then) 3-0 lead.

But wait … There’s more!

Dodgers center fielder Joc Pederson also picked the Cubs pocket when he stole third off of Cubs left-hander (and Southern California native) Mike Montgomery in the bottom of the eighth inning. He, too, would eventually come around to score on a ground out by Grandal to Cubs shortstop Javier Baez. Grandal’s ground out was the second out of the inning and was followed by a strikeout by Dodgers left fielder Howie Kendrick, meaning that Pederson would not have scored without his steal of third base.

Although not known for their base stealing prowess, the Dodgers have now stolen six bases in the 2016 postseason – two by Reddick, two by Pederson, one by second baseman Chase Utley and one by (brace yourselves) first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.

The Dodgers stole only 45 bases during the regular season, which was 27th among the 30 MLB teams. Only the Mets, Cardinals and Orioles stole fewer base with 42, 35 and 19 respectively.

Arrieta and Montero have been horrible against the stolen base this year. Kudos to Roberts for taking advantage, even though the game was decided by two long balls.
