Dodger fans still waiting for Jansen-Turner Christmas present

When word spread that 2016 NL Reliever of the Year and Dodgers new all-time saves leader Kenley Jansen, and 2016 NL Gold Glove runner-up third baseman Justin Turner had come to terms with the Dodgers for five years/$80 million and four years/$64 million respectively, there was a huge sigh of relief among Dodger fans everywhere.

Jansen’s and Turner’s return brought an abrupt end to the Dodgers needing to fill two enormous vacancies on their 2017 25-man roster (and beyond) and now allows Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and general manager Farhan Zaidi to redouble their efforts to find an everyday second baseman and additional bullpen help with spring training a mere eight weeks away.

But that news of the Jansen-Turner re-signings came on Tuesday, December 13 and we are now four days away from Christmas 2016 and there has still been no official confirmation of either free agent signing from the Dodgers which, quite frankly, is rather unusual for two of the biggest re-signings (and contracts) in franchise history.

We all know that the Turner and Jansen re-signings are unofficially official, but it sure would be nice to know that they are officially official. (Photos credit – TBS and Ron Cervenka)

As every Dodger fan knows by now, Jansen was married in his home country of Curaçao on December 10 and several of his Dodger teammates were in attendance – including Justin Turner. But while it goes without saying that the newlyweds would embark on their honeymoon immediately following their wedding, it was confirmed that Turner, who lives in Southern California, is back in town and in fact hosted an incredibly generous charity event (through his Justin Turner Foundation) this past weekend in which he and his longtime girlfriend Kourtney Elizabeth donated 2,000 bicycles and thousands of other Christmas gifts to kids at UCLA’s Mattel Children’s Hospital in West Los Angeles (in partnership with the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation).

While there is absolutely zero reason for Dodger fans to question the validity of the Jansen-Turner re-signings, the delay in an official announcement from the team is beginning to generate unsubstantiated concerns that perhaps there are issues with Jansen’s and/or Turner’s re-signing physicals or lingering injuries.

The silver lining to all of this is that the remarkable folks at Baseball Prospectus already have the two re-signings included on the Dodgers’ Cot’s Baseball Contracts page, and these folks rarely (if ever) get it wrong – so there’s that.

In the meantime, it sure would be nice for the Dodgers to give us what we all want for Christmas – confirmation that @kenleyjansen74 and @redturn2 are indeed still Dodgers.

Please Santa?

I thought I was the only one in the dark. Let’s hope we all find out soon, that it is official.
