Birthday wishes come flooding in for Vin Scully

It’s no secret that Hall of Fame Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully is not involved in social media, at least not on Twitter. Yet within minutes of the clock striking midnight on Wednesday morning, November 29, 2017, tweets began pouring in wishing the GOAT (Greatest of all Time) a Happy 90th Birthday, including several from some rather notable people.

Among the first to wish Vin Scully a Happy 90th Birthday were former Dodgers general manager and current SportsNet LA personalty Ned Colletti and longtime LA television sports reporter Ross Porter.

Vincent Edward Scully was born to Vincent Aloysius and Bridget Scully on this date in 1927 in the Washington Heights section of the Bronx in New York City. His father worked as a silk salesman and his mother was a Roman Catholic homemaker of Irish descent from whom her son inherited his red hair. His biological father died of pneumonia when Scully was only four years old and his mother later married an English merchant sailor named Allan Reeve, whom Scully always considered his real dad.

As a youngster, Scully worked delivering beer and mail, pushed garment racks, and cleaned silver in the basement of the Pennsylvania Hotel in New York City. He would go on to become the longest tenured broadcaster with any single team in professional sports history until his retirement in 2016 at age 89 in 2016 after his record-breaking run of 67 years as the Dodgers play-by-play announcer.

Scully’s final home broadcast was on September 25, 2016 against the Colorado Rockies at Dodger Stadium, which ended on a dramatic 10th-inning walk-off home run by little known Dodgers utility infielder / outfielder Charlie Culberson to clinch the 2016 National League West championship.

“Would you believe a home run?” said Scully after Culberson’s 10th-inning, game-winning, division-clenching home run during the legendary broadcaster’s final broadcast at Dodger Stadium on September 25, 2016.

His final broadcast came eight days later at AT&T Park against the San Francisco Giants, after which Scully signed off with brief prayer and this heartfelt message to his many of fans:

“You and I have been friends for a long time, but I know in my heart that I’ve always needed you more than you’ve ever needed me, and I’ll miss our time together more than I can say. But you know what? There will be a new day and eventually a new year. And when the upcoming winter gives way to spring, rest assured, once again it will be “time for Dodger baseball.” So this is Vin Scully wishing you a very pleasant good afternoon, wherever you may be.”

To the surprise of no one, at least to those who came to know Vin and his wife Sandi on a personal basis, Scully remains active to this very day and still drops in at Dodger Stadium from time to time to visit with his old friends and former colleagues.

On May 3, 2017, his name was added to the Dodgers ‘Ring of Honor’ joining the 12 Dodgers who have had their uniform numbers retired, all of whom Scully called their names during his illustrious career behind the microphone:  Pee Wee Reese (1), Tommy Lasorda (2) Duke Snider (4), Jim Gilliam (19), Don Sutton (20), Walter Alston (24), Sandy Koufax (32), Roy Campanella (39), Jackie Robinson (42) and Don Drysdale (53).

In 1982, Scully was the recipient of the prestigious Ford CFrick Award, the sixth announcer to be so honored, for which he has been immortalized with a plaque in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York.

On November 4, 2017, the beloved longtime Dodgers broadcaster was the guest of honor for ‘An Evening with Vin Scully,’ held at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. As you would expect, the event sold out shortly after tickets went on sale.
