Down on the Farm – Quakes Crack the Nuts

I know… I know… it’s a dumb title and one that has undoubtedly been used countless times, but what else can you say about a 12-2 shellacking, which is what the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes did to the Modesto Nuts (Rockies) on Monday afternoon.

The Quakes collected 16 hits on the day with every Quakes player in the line-up collecting at least one hit. Topping the hit parade (again) was Quakes third baseman C.J. Retherford who went 2 for 3 with a double and 4 RBIs, but Player of the Game honors definitely went to Quakes right fielder Jonathan Garcia and his 3 for 5 day that included a home run and 2 RBIs. Garcia was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle in the onslaught.

Brandon Martinez

Quakes right-hander Brandon Martinez picked up the win, his first of the season, to even his record at 1-1. Martinez allowed 2 runs on only 4 hits while striking out 5 and walking only one in his 6 innings of work. He lowered his ERA to a respectable 3.43.

The Quakes now trail the Cal League -South leading High Desert Mavericks (Mariners) by four games.

Really good to see Garcia coming on. He set Great Lakes on fire for the first half last season and then died out.

He has homers in two of his last three games. He plays the full season as a 21 year old.

No worries 53. That title was probably the least offensive of the many options at your disposal.

I think “Quakes Shake the Nuts” might have been a bit unsettling. Was that my inside voice again? Oooops…

I was going to use “bust” but some might have found that offensive – haha.

PS: Who would name a team the “Nuts” anyway?
