Mark Ellis Shows No Ill Effects During First Rehab Start

In what many are calling a miracle recovery, Dodgers second baseman Mark Ellis showed no apparent ill effects during his first rehab game with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Saturday night at JetHawks Stadium in Lancaster. Ellis suffered a serious injury to his left leg on May 18 when Tyler Greene of the St. Louis Cardinals slid into him during a hard but clean takeout play at second base. Ellis required an emergency fasciotomy on his leg the following morning with reports that had it not been done immediately, the 35-year-old Ellis might have lost his leg.

Mark Ellis showed no ill effects during his first rehab game with the Quakes on Saturday evening. Ellis is scheduled to make three more rehab starts before his possible return to the Dodgers on Thursday in Arizona.

As one might expect after a six-week layoff, Ellis was a bit rusty at the plate going 0 for 4 on the night as the Quakes Designated Hitter with a strikeout, a pop-up and a ground out. However, he did give his recovering leg a thorough workout when he beat out a throw to first base on a fielder’s choice during his fourth and final at bat of the night in the 7th inning. Ellis scored moments later from first base on a double by Quakes All-Star third baseman C.J. Retheford. Ellis was pinch hit for in the 9th inning by Bobby Coyle with the Quakes eventually falling to the JetHawks 8-7 in spite of mounting a strong comeback attempt. Dodgers Senior Director of Medical Services Stan Conte was on hand to closely monitor Ellis and he appeared quite pleased with the results of Ellis’ first rehab game.

Ellis is slated to play in three additional rehab games at second base for the Quakes with an innings limit of five, seven and seven on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday respectively. If all goes well, Ellis is expected to be reactivated from the DL and will join the Dodgers in Arizona for a 4-game series against the D-Backs prior to the All-Star break.

Dodgers reliever Javy Guerra will make his first rehab start with the Quakes on Sunday afternoon. Guerra is recovering from knee surgery for a torn MCL suffered while trying to dodge a line drive that struck him in the face. Fortunately, Guerra suffered no facial injuries during that scary incident.

Dodgers reliever Javy Guerra will begin his re-hab with the Quakes on Sunday afternoon and is expected to pitch on consecutive days with a possible return to the Big team before the All-Star break as well. Guerra is recovering from arthroscopic surgery for a small tear in his right lateral meniscus (knee). Guerra suffered the injury on April 25 after being struck in the cheek by a line drive off of the bat of  Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann. Guerra twisted his knee while trying to get out of the way of the liner.

The Ellis return will be a huge addition to this ball club. Kudos to Sue Falsone for her proper diagnosis and getting him to the hospital right away to deal with this serious injury. It looks what we thought to be a season ending injury will be something that Mark will recover from in 5 weeks time. Quite amazing and credit should be given to Ellis and the training staff. It looks like Ellis, Ethier and Kemp will all be contributing right after the all star break. If these guys can stay within striking distance, it’ll be a brand new ball club in a week or two and the season that appears so bleak right now will take a turn in a positive direction.
