Dodgers Call Up Federowicz and Guerra – Purchase Ely’s Contract

The Dodgers have recalled catcher Tim Federowicz and right-handed pitcher Javy Guerra and selected the contract of right-hander John Ely from Triple-A Albuquerque. To make room on the 40-man roster, the club transferred outfielder Alfredo Silverio to the 60-day disabled list.

Ely, who will wear No. 48, was selected as the Pacific Coast League’s Pitcher of the Year in addition to being named a midseason PCL All-Star and being selected to the postseason All-PCL team. The 26-year-old has a shot at winning the league’s pitching Triple Crown as he’s currently tied for first on the circuit with 14 wins and leads the league with a 3.20 ERA and 165 strikeouts. Ely finished the campaign on a six-game winning streak, going 6-0 with a 2.47 ERA (15 ER/54.2 IP) over his final eight starts since July 23. The Illinois native made his big league debut in 2010 and is 4-11 with a 5.35 ERA in 23 Major League games (19 starts).

Federowicz, who will wear No. 52, was selected as both a midseason Pacific Coast League All-Star and to the postseason All-PCL team, batting .294 with a team-high 34 doubles, 11 home runs and 76 RBI in 115 games. The 25-year-old is coming off his best month of the season, hitting .345 with 10 doubles, a homer and 18 RBI in 26 August games. The former University of North Carolina Tar Heel made his big league debut in 2011, going 2-for-13 with an RBI in seven games.

Guerra posted an 8.31 ERA (4 ER/4.1 IP) in three appearances for the Isotopes since being optioned on August 21. Prior to being sent down, the 26-year-old had made nine consecutive scoreless appearances (11.1 IP) since July 28 and overall is 2-3 with eight saves and a 2.66 ERA in 44 appearances with the Dodgers this season.
