Dodgers Protect Ames and Magill from Rule-5 Draft

As predicted by our very own ThinkBlueLA resident minor league expert Harold Uhlman, the Dodgers have promoted right-handed pitchers Steven Ames and Matt Magill to the Major League roster, thus protecting them from being drafted by any other MLB team via the Rule-5 draft.

Ames, 24, who hails from Vancouver, WA, pitched for Double-A Chattanooga of the Southern League last year and was 3-3 with 18 saves and a 1.56 ERA in 54 games. The reliever struck out 72 batters in 63.1 innings of work and held right-handed hitters to a .177 average (25-for-141). Ames was selected by the Dodgers in the 17th round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft.

Magill, 23, is a local product, who was drafted out of Royal High School in Simi Valley, CA in the 31st round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft. The California native had a great season at Double-A Chattanooga in 2012 as he started 26 games for the Lookouts, posting an 11-8 record with a 3.75 ERA. The right-hander fanned 168 batters in his 146.1 innings, including four games with 10 or more strikeouts.

The addition of the two pitchers brings the Dodgers’ Major League roster to 38 players.

It was pretty much a given that Steven Ames and Matt Magill would be protected if any minor leaguers were. Both seem to perform very well but have not been very high on the Dodger radar. Maybe they are more noticeable now because of the minor league pitchers the Dodgers have traded.

I expect that since they both are coming off good seasons, progressing well, they have a high trade value and had to be protected. If the Dodgers make a trade for a starter, Ames and Magill may well be a part of that trade, more valued being on a 40 man roster. If not traded, Ames could pitch in LA this season if needed. He may be organizational depth if Josh Wall became part of a trade.

Now now, we’ll have none of this talk about trading Josh Wall or you’ll break fansince85’s heart – unless, of course, they trade him to New York. 😉

Don’t tell Christina about it. Let it be our little secret.

Dodgers have apparently talked with Kyuji Fujikawa. If signed the bullpen gets crowded. I expect Guerra, Elbert and Jansen have to report healthy and ready to go for Josh to be expendable. If there is no spot for him with the Dodgers, I hope he gets to play somewhere at the MLB level.
