Babe Ruth bobblehead among 2014 promotional items

On Friday the Dodgers announced their 2014 promotional schedule and lo and behold it includes a Babe Ruth bobblehead giveaway on September 9, 2014 in a game against the Padres. It is, in fact, the final bobblehead giveaway of the season and certain to become a huge collector’s item.

Many baseball fans may not realize that baseball’s greatest player once wore a Dodger uniform. In fact, it was the last major league uniform he would ever wear. It was in 1938 when ‘The Bambino’ served as the Brooklyn Dodgers first base coach (he wore uniform number 35). Ruth had aspirations of replacing Burleigh Grimes as the new Dodgers manager, but that didn’t work out and Leo Durocher eventually got the job. (Ruth and Durocher did not get along well at all). But regardless, for one brief moment in baseball history, Babe Ruth was a Dodger.

Although the great Babe Ruth put fannies in the seats at Ebbets Field during his brief time as a Dodgers coach, he simply did not have what it took to be a successful coach or manager, as Dodgers GM Larry MacPhail had hoped he would. (AP photo)
