How did we miss this one?

With all of the hype and hoopla over the Hall of Fame voting the past two or three weeks and with the Dodgers PR Department holding an on-line Twitter poll on who Dodger fans want as their ‘People’s Choice’ promotional bobblehead for the upcoming 2014 season, how on earth did we not put these two things together?

I mean, if ever there were a perfect fit it would be a Greg Maddux in a Dodgers uniform bobblehead which, as luck would have it, would come out within weeks (June 26 to be exact) of the newly elected Hall of Famer’s induction into the sacred Halls of Cooperstown.

With no disrespect whatsoever to any current Dodgers, wouldn’t you rather have a Greg Maddux in a Dodgers uniform bobblehead in the same year that he was enshrined in the Hall of Fame? (Photo credit – Jae C Hong)

I’m not sure if others came up with this suggestion but with the voting down to its final two days, it may me too late for Greg Maddux to surpass favorites A.J. Ellis or Brian Wilson in the voting, but let’s be real here – are A.J. Ellis and Brian Wilson future Hall of Famers?

A Greg Maddux Dodger bobblehead in the same year that he is enshrined into the National Baseball Hall of Fame would be a tremendously valuable collector’s item and one of the most coveted Dodger bobbleheads of all time – Vin Scully notwithstanding.

By the way, if this Greg Maddux in a Dodgers uniform bobblehead thing ever comes to fruition, Ken Gurnick does not get one.

A good suggestion Ron. A good reminder, if anyone has forgotten, that Greg Maddux once pitched for the Dodgers. Now I know I hardly if ever come up with a good suggestion, this article got me to think of something. What do you think of the Dodgers having a bobblehead night for Mike Piazza? Just asking.

  2. Bluenose Dodger says:

OBF – I think Piazza has been offered a bobblehead night.

“Mike Piazza has not set foot in Dodger Stadium since his retirement. When the Dodgers offered to honor him with a bobblehead night last season, Piazza declined.”

I’m not so convinced about a possible Greg Maddux bobblehead. He had 73 innings with the Dodgers. I know he is HOF+ but he is not Dodger+ simply by not playing very much with them. I think it would be a bit of a stretch to connect him to the HOF and brief stint with the Dodgers.

I agree BD, in what you say about Maddux, he just wasn’t a Dodger long enough to make any connections, unless it’s just to thank you. As far as Piazza goes I apparently forgot he was already offered a bobblehead night and declined. I was hoping with new management Piazza may have had a change of heart but you can’t blame him for the way he feels. So I doubt it would make sense to make him another offer.

I meant just to say “Thank You” to Maddux.

This has nothing to do with new management, Joe – they DID invite him back into the organization but he flat out refused. And then when he attacked Vin Scully in his book, he sealed his fate with the Dodger organization forever.

That being said, if he makes the Hall, the Dodgers are obligated to retire his uniform number and I (for one) cannot wait for that to happen.

      • OldBrooklynFan says:

I didn’t know that the Dodgers were obligated to retire his number if he makes the Hall of Fame. I agree that would be quite a day and I sure hope it happens.

        • Bluenose Dodger says:

OBF – I don’t think it’s etched in stone but is a tradition, perhaps a self imposed obligation. I think it is a good one and would certainly be a slight not to do so with Piazza. I know things didn’t end well with the Dodgers but that ending should never have been possible by an ill advised trade.

I think management/ownership would still try to bridge that gap with Piazza. Honoring him by retiring a number as a member of the HOF is a lot different than a bobblehead night. Not to retire his number would be childish as is Mike’s stance with the Dodgers. Present ownership/management didn’t trade him and the fans didn’t give up on him. The comments re: VIn were unfortunate but Vin would not make that an issue with Mike and I expect are already forgiven,if not forgotten.

        • Ron Cervenka says:

I say obligated only because every Dodger player enshrined in the Hall of Fame has had their uniform number retired, along with managers Walter Alston and Tommy Lasorda. If they do not retire Piazza’s number he would be the first.
