Down on the Farm – Five Lookouts selected to Southern League All-Star team

The 2014 Southern League All-Star Game will be held on June 17 at AT&T Field in Chattanooga. Representing the Dodgers Double-A affiliate Chattanooga Lookouts on the Northern Division team will be Scott ScheblerDarnell SweeneyTyson Brummett, and Chris Reed. Outfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker was also selected but was promoted to Triple-A Albuquerque last Wednesday; as such, he will not participate in the Southern League All-Star Game. In his short time with the Isotopes, Hazelbaker is hitting .250 with one home run and five RBIs – this after hitting .296 with three home runs and 27 RBIs with the Lookouts, thus earning him the promotion.

Outfielder Schebler has had a bit of a slow start to his season but has been blistering hot for the past ten games hitting .359 with three home runs and seven runs batted in. During his streak he hit for the cycle on Saturday, May 31 after hitting a walk off homer the previous evening. On the season Schebler is hitting .256 with 11 home runs and 33 runs batted in. He is third in the Southern League in home runs and has a league leading seven triples tying him with former teammate Jeremy Hazelbaker.

Second baseman Darnell Sweeney has surprised many with his performance at the AA level but not himself: “This was one of my goals coming into the season, and I just thank God every day for giving me the opportunity to play here,” Sweeney said. “Scott and I came in here knowing that Double-A pitching was the equivalent to major league pitching, and this kind of shows that we can hang out with the big dogs.” His .316 batting average ranks sixth in the league. His 66 hits are the third most in the league as are his 16 doubles. His OBP of .409 places him fourth while his 33 walks are the fourth most only four behind league leader and slugger Kris Bryant.

Starting pitcher Tyson Brummett was signed as a minor league free agent by the Dodgers. The 29 year old had an ERA well below 2.00 until a recent outing in which he gave up five earned runs in four innings. His ERA rose to 2.38 which still ranks him fifth in the league. His WHIP is a very respectable 1.17. In April his ERA was 0.39 in 23 innings.

Left-handed pitcher Chris Reed has been a work horse for the Lookouts pitching 70.2 innings the fourth most in the league. Like Tyson Brummett Reed had a rough outing in his first June start giving up four earned runs in four innings pushing his ERA up to 3.18 which still ranks tenth best in the league. Reed has given up only 54 hits in his 70.2 innings with a resulting 1.17 WHIP. His 75 strikeouts lead the league while his improved control has resulted in only 29 walks. After a bit of a relapse with control in mid-May Reed responded with 21 strikeouts in his next three starts with only three walks in 17 innings.
