Vin Scully’s missing World Series ring – The 10 minutes the world stood still

One can only imagine the sheer panic that 87-year-old Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully felt when he suddenly realized that his prize possession, his 1988 Dodgers World Series ring, was missing from his right ring finger. The beloved broadcaster lost the ring while out Christmas shopping with his wife Sandi on Thursday afternoon at their neighborhood Costco store.

“I kept telling myself, ‘A ring is only a thing, it’s only a thing,'” Scully told L.A. Times writer Bill Plaschke. “But I felt so terrible.”

After a thorough search of the store with employees came up empty, Scully immediately contacted Steve Brener of the Dodgers PR department, who promptly issue a BOLO (Be On the Look Out) alert on Twitter. Incredibly, the tweet went viral and was immediately retweeted by concerned Dodger fans – A LOT of them. In fact, the Dodgers tweet received nearly 4,000 retweets within 10 minutes.

Just how big of a deal was this? To put it into perspective, Scully’s missing ring retweets far exceeded the number of retweets that USA Today MLB reporter Bob Nightengale’s tweet received breaking the Matt Kemp “severe arthritis” news. Throughout the entire day Nightengale’s tweet received slightly over 700 retweets.

Fortunately, when you are as connected as the great Vin Scully is, good things happen and Scully’s ring was found a short while later in the bottom of one of their shopping bags by Mrs. Scully. After immediately notifying the store to call off the search, Scully recontacted Brener, thus giving Dodger fans everywhere a collective sigh of relief.

“You know, maybe God heard me say [‘A ring is only a thing’],” said an extremely relieved (and slightly embarrassed) Scully.

There is little doubt that when you are affectionately known as ‘The voice of God,’ you’re bound to receive a little ‘divine intervention’ every now and then.

As they say – all’s well that ends well.

“Gooood night everybody.”

Needless to say, I’m happy that Vin’s happy his wife found his ring. It’s not a good feeling knowing that he’s worried about anything.
