Dodgers activate Joc Pederson from DL, recall Luis Avilan

The Dodgers have activated outfielder Joc Pederson from the 15-day disabled list, recalled left-handed reliever Luis Avilan from Triple-A Oklahoma City and placed both right-handed reliever Casey Fien and left-handed starter Hyun-Jin Ryu on the 15-day disabled list with what is being called “elbow tendonitis” – retroactive to July 17 and July 9 respectively.

Pederson missed 15 games due to a sprained right AC joint after colliding with the outfield wall on June 28 in Milwaukee. Prior to that the 24-year-old Palo Alto, California native hit .281 (16 for 57) with four doubles, five home runs and seven RBIs in his previous 18 games. He went 5 for 8 (.625) with a run scored and four walks in his three rehab appearances with the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers.

When Pederson injured his right AC joint on June 28, everyone immediately thought of Matt Kemp’s shoulder injury that plagued him for over two years. Fortunately, Joc’s injury was relatively minor.

Avilan, who is celebrating his 27th birthday today, has appeared in six games in his three previous stints with the Dodgers allowing three runs in 3.0 innings. The Caracas, Venezuela native is averaging better than a strikeout per inning with Triple-A OKC this year, striking out 30 in 28.0 innings, while posting an 0-3 record with four saves and a 4.82 ERA in 27 games.

Ryu made one start with the Dodgers on July 7, allowing six runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings against the Padres in his first start since September 12, 2014. The 29-year-old Incheon, South Korea native underwent shoulder surgery for a torn labrum on May 21, 2015.

Fien, who has struggled in his last several appearances, is 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA (10 ER/22.0 IP) in 21 relief appearances since being claimed off waivers from the Minnesota Twins on May 7. It wasn’t really a matter of if the Dodgers were going to make some type of move with the 32-year-old Santa Rosa, California native, but when. Because he is out of options, Fien would have to set the world on fire during his rehab assignment once he is reactivated from the DL to avoid the same fate he suffered with the Twins.

I was pulling for Casey. He is a true Californian; born in Northern Cal, high school in Southern Cal, and college along the California Central Coast. But he is just going to get lost in the numbers. Maybe they can hide him until September. I think if he gets waived, he will get picked up.

Luis Avilan has been sporadic and mediocre for most of his career. He needs more command of that FB so that he can showcase the change. That is his swing and miss pitch. But so far, teams are just sitting on his fastball.

I am inclined to just shut Ryu down until September when he can come in for an inning or two, or altogether until next spring. To think he can start and be effective in the middle of a pennant chase does not look promising. It does not make sense to start a pitcher who you know is unlikely to go 5 innings much less 7. I would think that it would be more beneficial to wait until next Spring to see if has fully recovered. There is no reason to push. Placing him back on the 60-day DL also opens a spot on the 40-man

I see that Josh Ravin made his debut last night with the AZL Dodgers; 1 IP, 2 K, nothing across. I am guessing that Casey Fien or Josh Ravin are both candidates to be DFAd from 40 man once De Leon is deemed ready. There will also need to be a move once Alex Wood comes off 60-day DL and I assume that Brett Anderson is going to be recalled from 60-day DL as well. It would appear that 3 40-man spots will need to be opened for Wood, Anderson, and De Leon, and presuming that De Leon will be a September call-up, 2 25-man spots for Wood and Anderson. It looks like pins and needle times ahead for Louis Coleman, Chris Hatcher, Luis Avilan, and JP Howell.
