Dodgers Spring Training 2019 Third Quarter Report Card

Only seven Cactus League games remain before Dodgers break camp and head back to LA for the annual Freeway Series with the Angels. This is the last progress report before final spring training report cards will be posted – rostered players only (non-roster invitees and optioned players not included).  Players who moved up are in bold; players who moved down in italics):

A+

  • Justin Turner – cooled off a bit but still having a terrific spring
  • Cody Bellinger – his reworked mechanics paying huge dividends
  • Rich Hill – arguably the best spring training of his career
  • Hyun-Jin Ryu – rough first inning on March 14, then back to being lights-out
  • Kiké Hernandez – leads the team in hits, second in RBI, 1.066 OPS
  • Barnes – 1.030 OPS and leads the team in RBI (drops the microphone)
  • Yimi Garcia – has earned his roster spot
  • Julio Urias – arguably the Dodgers best pitcher this spring
With his game-winning two-run opposite field home run on Saturday against the Chicago White Sox, Austin Barnes now has 12 RBI on the spring – tops on the team.

A

  • Alex Verdugo – earned a roster spot, now working to get a regular position
  • Kenley Jansen – nasty this spring. He’s ready
  • Scott Alexander – ready to start the season
  • Jamie Schultz – has pitched great, but unlikely to make opening day roster

B

  • Ross Stripling – terrific starting pitcher blocked by numbers
  • Russell Martin – healthy and playing well; Barnes’ backup
  • Kenta Maeda – looked sharp last outing
  • Joe Kelly – made the biggest jump with his brilliant performance on Saturday, when he struck out the side on 14 pitches. This is why the Dodgers signed him

C

  • AJ Pollock
  • David Freese
  • JT Chargois
  • Dylan Floro

D

  • Chris Taylor – started off well, but has looked awful of late.  NRIs and minor leaguers have out played him
  • Joc Pederson – thunder in his bat, but striking out almost 40% of plate appearances

F

  • Caleb Ferguson – having a disappointing spring
  • Pedro Baez – looked horrible until Saturday, when he struck out two of the three batters he faced. But still difficult to get memories of Bad Pedro out of your head

Incomplete

  • Clayton Kershaw – getting closer … we are frequently told
  • Walker Buehler – scheduled to make his first Cactus League start on Tuesday
  • Corey Seager – playing in minor league games. Should see major league action next week
  • Tony Cingrani – will begin the season on the IL
  • Max Muncy – would whoever kidnapped the real Max Muncy kindly bring him back? His impostor is terrible
