Dodgers place Kenta Maeda on injured list

Less than 24 hours after his best pitching performance of the season, Dodgers right-hander Kenta Maeda has been placed on the 10-day injured list for what has unofficially been reported as an injury sustained when he fouled a ball off his thigh during his brilliant outing on Wednesday night against the San Diego Padres at Dodger Stadium.

This from Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register on Twitter:

As Plunkett notes, the Dodgers have activated 22-year-old left-hander Caleb Ferguson from the injured list, recalled 26-year-old infielder Matt Beaty, and called up 27-year-old outfielder and La Habra, CA native Kyle Garlick from Triple-A Oklahoma City, while optioning 28-year-old right-hander JT Chargois and 31-year-old catcher Rocky Gale back to OKC.

Beaty made his MLB debut with the Dodgers on April 30 and appeared in three games before being optioned back to OKC. This is Garlick’s first call-up to The Show.

As Dodger fans know, Maeda was absolutely outstanding on Wednesday night, allowing no runs and only three hits in his 6.2 innings of work. He did not walk a batter while striking out a season-high 12 Padres batters, all swinging.

Although Maeda will probably be on the IL for the 10-day minimum, losing him for any period of time when he has been pitching so well is a huge blow to the Dodgers starting rotation. (Photo credit – Ron Cervenka)

But the real story is what the 31-year-old Senboku-gun, Japan native did at the plate, injury notwithstanding. The popular right-hander went 2-for-3 with two singles and drove in the Dodgers only two runs in the 2-0 shutout win.

  1. Is this for real or one of those fake injury moves just to bring somebody up?

  2. Manuel says:

Meh, they just wanted to get Ferguson back on the parent club roster and Maeda made it all too convenient for them to do so with two off-days this week (lol). Speaking of which, looks like Cingrani’s close to returning as well so there could be more transactions to be made real soon. On the other hand, GLAD Garlick’s finally getting a taste of MLB action for the first time in his pro career! If the Dodgers want more right-handed punch for their bench (especially against southpaws), then Kyle just might provide it for them in the meantime. Power numbers are split right down the middle for him when it comes to righties and lefties, but he absolutely KILLS lefties by comparison. Kinda reminds me of Hernandez in that sense…
