Dodgers call up Tony Gonsolin

ThinkBlueLA has learned from a trusted source that the Dodgers have called up 25-year-old right-hander Tony Gonsolin from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

The 6′-3″ / 205-pound Vacaville, CA native, who was selected by the Dodgers in the ninth round of the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of St. Mary’s College of California in Moraga, CA, will join the team in Phoenix, where the National League West first place Dodgers will open a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field beginning on Monday evening at 6:40 pm PT.

Gonsolin, who received an invitation to major league spring training camp this past February, was assigned to the OKC Dodgers out of spring training. He appeared in eight games (all starts) with the Dodgers Triple-A affiliate, posting a 1-1 record and 2.77 ERA, while striking out 31 and walking 13 in his 26.0 innings pitched. He held opposing hitters to a .202 batting average, while allowing only one home run.

Gonsolin appeared in four spring training games with the Dodgers (two starts) and did not allow a run in his combined 9.0 innings pitched. He struck out six and walked two, while holding opposing hitters to a minuscule .194 batting average.

Although there has been no official announcement from the Dodgers on the move yet, nor is a corresponding roster move yet known, it is believed that Gonsolin, a starter throughout most of his four-year minor league career, could be used to replace Dodgers left-hander Rich Hill in the team’s starting rotation, although this is entirely speculation.

Hill, as you may recall, was pulled from his start on June 19 after only one inning for “left forearm soreness.” A subsequent MRI revealed that the 39-year-old Boston, MA native had suffered a “strained flexor tendon” near his surgically-repaired left elbow and he is expected to remain on the injured list for quite some time. He does, however, expect to pitch again this season.

    OUTSTANDING!

    We got this

  3. Eric Schultz says:

Stripling deserves to pitch as he’s not getting in his ‘reps’ as the long reliever and he shined as a starter in April (not to mention the first half of last year) . Gonsolin can do ONE start (maybe the 6th starter gig that Uriàs handled last week and alternate with Uriàs in that role…) .

@VinScullyTrib Who would be going down to make room?

  5. love this … but also, when do they start stretching out Urias? after the ASB?

    • Ron Cervenka says:

I’m thinking that they will continue to stretch him out, but will slow-play it in hopes that he will be 100% ready to go once the postseason begins. But here again, just a guess on my part.

  6. Carlos Peralta says:

I see they haven’t decided on a starter for Tuesday. If he does start on Tuesday, would he be pitching on regular days rest?

    • Ron Cervenka says:

His last start at OKC was on Thursday, June 20, which lines up perfectly for a Tuesday start … if it happens.

This is good news. They’ll probably transfer Cingrani to the 60 day IL.We need another hard throwing right hander in the rotation.Best of luck Tony.

Only one thing to say about this: FINALLY!!! Gonsolin’s big-league arrival couldn’t have come soon enough, but since they were busy stretching him out again after he came off the IL a few weeks ago I take it they’re gonna use him as another “piggyback” option out of the pen to keep the starter workload down while Hill’s busy recuperating from his minor forearm injury. On top of that, the Dodgers continue to play this rather long stretch of games without an off-day in between so this move really needed to be made right now. Best of luck Tony AND WELCOME TO THE SHOW!

I see him coming up to either spot start on Tuesday or Wednesday to bump Buehler back one day.
