Dustin May promoted to Triple-A OKC

ThinkBlue LA has learned from a reliable source that 21-year-old right-hander Dustin May has been promoted from the Dodgers Double-A affiliate Tulsa Drillers to their Triple-A affiliate Oklahoma City Dodgers.

The move comes as a surprise to absolutely no one, especially after May’s brilliant seven-inning shutout performance on June 22 in which he allowed only two hits while walking none and striking out 14 Amarillo Sod Poodles (Padres) batters. Although May did not figure in the decision in the eventual 2-1 Drillers win, that career-best outing earned the Justin, TX native and Dodgers fourth overall ranked prospect Texas League Pitcher of the Week honors.

One day after Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler struck out 16 Colorado Rockies batters at Dodger Stadium, Drillers right-hander Dustin May struck out 14 Amarillo Sod Poodle batters at ONEOK Field in downtown Tulsa.

In his 15 appearances (all starts) with the Drillers this season, May posted a 3-5 record and 3.74 ERA. He walked 20 while striking out 86 for a very good 4.30 K/BB ratio, while giving up only five home runs in his combined 79.1 innings pitched.

There are some – many, in fact – who believe that May, who was selected by the Dodgers in the third round of the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Northwest High School in Justin, TX, will be among the September call-ups to the Dodgers this season. His well-deserved promotion to Triple-A brings the popular 6′-6″ / 180-pound hard-throwing redhead one step closer to fulfilling that lifelong dream.

Dodgers are gonna have so many viable options down at AAA OKC during the second half of this season at the rate they’ve been promoting the kids so far. May’s promotion was also timely as OKC’s been struggling to get their starters to go deep in their outings all season long (reason why “reinvented” knuckleballer JD Martin had to be called up from AA Tulsa to spot start for ’em last night, did a solid job considering). And the sooner middle infield prospect Omar Estevez returns from his current rehab assignment with the AZL Dodgers, the sooner top middle infield prospect Gavin Lux follows May to OKC for that matter. Wouldn’t mind seeing relievers Jordan Sheffield and Andre Scrubb get their tickets punched for OKC as well. Having those two waiting in the wings would add even more depth to a big-league Dodger bullpen that has had to put in some major overtime due to various ailments to the starting staff, Rich Hill’s forearm injury merely being the latest setback.

Folks on here should also be on the lookout for OF Zach Reks on that OKC roster. He’s currently in the midst of a major breakout campaign this year and his power tool has really come alive in particular. Was always undervalued even dating back to his HS days, but there’s no doubt he’s proven to be one of the Dodgers’ better hitting prospects in their system (at least as good at squaring up the ball as Matt Beaty has shown recently). Could very well be the next homegrown kid to be brought up following Verdugo, Beaty, Smith, Garlick, and most recently Gonsolin so far this season.

I think the Dodgers have enough of a lead in the West that they’re going to really try out a number of minor leaguers to see if there’s anyone surprising they may want to add to the ML roster for the stretch run and possibly the post season..

After 2 consecutive losses in the World Series they must be feeling their window may close if they don’t. JT isn’t getting any younger, Martin likely will be gone in 2020. Who know about Kike and even CT3 next year,God Forbid they deal Joc (UGH!)

They need – and fortunately HAVE – a potentially big infusion of youth and talent in their system, GO DODGERS!!!
