Dodgers 2020 Draft – Round 2

For the Dodgers first selection (number 29) in the 2020 first-year player draft, we reviewed the backgrounds of right handed, college pitchers Bobby Miller (University of Louisville), Tanner Burns (Auburn University), and JT Ginn (Mississippi State University), along with right handed high school catcher Drew Romo.

Today, relying on Major League Baseball Pipeline, Baseball America, and Fangraphs most current rankings of the 2020 draft prospects, we will look at the players ranked number 61 by each resource as potential Dodgers selections.

MLB Pipeline

Logan Allen – Left-handed pitcher, right-handed hitting first baseman for Florida International University; 6’-0” – 180 lbs.

Allen has two years of college eligibility remaining but will be 22 years old in 2020. Although he slashed .297/.362/.410 as a hitter, he will be drafted as a pitcher with awesome command of his pitching arsenal. With an average fastball that ranges from 90 to 94 mph, a plus change-of-pace, and average breaking pitch, Allen has had a successful college career with a 3.33 ERA, 246 strikeouts, and only 47 walks in 184 innings. Attacking the strike zone, he fearlessly pitches inside to any hitter.

Baseball America ranks Allen as its number 52 draft prospect; Fangraphs has him ranked at number 94.

Baseball America

Yohandy Morales – shortstop Braddock high school, Miami Florida; 6’-4” – 195 lb.; bats right-handed

Morales has been rising rapidly in Baseball America’s draft prospect rankings as a physically imposing, high school senior, with a power bat, and a high ceiling. He has more than enough arm for shortstop, but his size (expected to put on additional weight and strength), may ultimately result in a position change as a professional, perhaps to third or first base. His plus raw power comes against fastballs, struggling against off-speed breaking pitches. Scouts noted he had a much better approach in the first few games in the virus shortened season. He is but one of many high school seniors who may be negatively impacted by not playing many games this spring. Should he fall too far in the draft, he will more than likely keep his baseball commitment to Miami University.

Fangraphs has Morales as its 52nd-draft prospect; MLB Pipeline does not include Morales in its top one hundred.

Fangraphs

Nick Griffin – left-handed pitcher and outfielder, Monticello high school, Arkansas; 6’-4” – 175 lbs.

Two-way prospect: Tall, lean, very good all-around athlete, strong arm, good running speed, excellent academic student, with significant physical projection. Loose arm from the left side who impressed during the fall with a fastball up to 93 and a swing-and-miss slider in the low to mid 80s. Verbal commitment to University of Arkansas

Ranked 171 prospect by Baseball America; not ranked in MLB Pipeline top 100

Attempting to predict which player will be selected by any team, in any round becomes progressively more difficult after every selection. The Dodgers would likely be pleased to draft and sign anyone of these three players.

Next, we will look at players who may be available when the Dodgers make their compensatory pick after the second round (number 67) that was acquired from the Minnesota Twins in the Kenta Maeda trade.

I have to believe that if Manfred is successful in reducing the MLB Draft to only five rounds, there will be very few high schoolers drafted – unless they are Kershaw-esque.

Great point. Unless one of the highly regarded high schoolers (outfielders Zac Veen, or Austin Hendrick – Baseball America no. 8 & 9 prospects) fall all the way to the Dodgers spot.
