“I’d Be Shocked if There Wasn’t Baseball”

It goes without saying that there isn’t a Dodger – or baseball – fan out there who isn’t hoping (and praying) that there will be a 2020 Major League Baseball season in some form or fashion. But to hear former Dodgers general manager and current SportsNet LA analyst Ned Colletti say during Thursday night’s Access SportsNet Dodgers broadcast that he would ‘be shocked’ if there isn’t baseball in 2020 is exactly what we needed to hear.

“Absolutely. I’d be shocked if there wasn’t baseball,” Colletti said when asked by show host John Hartung if he and former Dodgers Jerry Harriston Jr. and Orel Hershiser thought there would be a 2020 MLB season. “Health is obviously the major issue. I think once everybody thinks that they can play and get back and do it in a healthy environment, I’d be shocked if they didn’t play.”

Oh sure, it’s easy to argue that Colletti, Hershiser, and JHair are merely towing the company line because of their current positions with the Dodgers’ exclusive television station, but the conviction with which the trio answered Hartung’s question made it difficult not to buy into their respective opinions that there will indeed be a 2020 MLB season; this in spite of the current (and anticipated) disagreements between MLB and the MLB Players Association over financial and contractual issues being (strategically) leaked out over social media.

“I know in the league right now both sides are kind of fighting back and forth, but I have a feeling we will see baseball in 2020,” Hairston said confidently.

“Yes fans, get excited. I think we’re definitely gonna have baseball,” echoed Hershiser. “This is just noise right now. Both sides will figure it out.”

If there is indeed a 2020 MLB season, games will be played under very strict COVID-19 protocols and in stadiums without fans. That being said, the Dodgers have made it abundantly clear that every 2020 regular and postseason game will be televised on SportsNet LA.
