Walking the Walk

Anyone who even remotely followed major league baseball this season is well aware that the San Diego Padres, who finished second in the National League West with a 37-23 (.617) record, “Talked the Talk” during the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season.

Anyone who even remotely followed major league baseball this season is also well aware that the Los Angeles Dodgers, who won the NL West (for the eighth consecutive time) with a 43-17 (.717) record, “Walked the Walk” during the short season.

A bit harsh, you say?

Perhaps; but not really.

It would be unfair – and simply wrong – not to recognize what the Padres accomplished during the 60-game 2020 season. First and foremost, they have a legitimate 2020 NL MVP candidate in their midst in 21-year-old shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., who finished the truncated regular season with an excellent slash line of .277 / .366 / .571 / .937 with 17 home runs, 11 doubles, two triples, and 45 RBI. They also hit a combined 95 home runs, including an MLB-best seven grand slams to earn the (self-anointed) nickname “Slam Diego Padres;” a feat – and nickname – that they were very outspoken about (ad nauseam). In other words, the 2020 San Diego Padres “Talked the Talk.”

But the Dodgers also have a legitimate 2020 NL MVP candidate in their midst – two, in fact – in 26-year-old right fielder and future Hall of Famer Mookie Betts, who slashed .292 / .366 / .562 / .927 with 16 home runs, nine doubles, one triple, and 39 RBI; and 26-year-old shortstop Corey Seager, who slashed .295 / .362 / .500 / .863 with 15 home runs, 12 doubles, one triple, and 41 RBI, and hit a combined MLB-best 118 home runs; all of which they did very little boasting about while occupying first place in the division for the entire season. In other words, the 2020 Los Angeles Dodgers “Walked the Walk.”

  2. Well I guess it’s time to congratulate our heroes on winning another NLDS and bring on this year’s version of the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS.

Kudos to the Padres for a great season and phenomenal improvement over last years (the last decade’s?) team. Now that the Giants won’t be relevant for several years, it’s great to have a new rival who is capable of getting us in shape for the playoffs…
