Baseball world saddened over traffic deaths in Dominican Republic

The entire staff at ThinkBlueLA extends our sincerest condolences to the families, friends and teammates of Kansas City Royals right-hander Yordano Ventura and former major league infielder Andy Marte, both of whom died in separate traffic accidents in the Dominican Republic overnight.

Ventura, who was selected by the Royals as an amateur free agent in 2008, had a career mark of 38-31 and 3.89 ERA. The 25-year-old Samana, Dominican Republic native was a big part of the Royals 2015 World Series championship team with his 13-8 record and 4.08 ERA in his 28 starts.

Marte, who was selected as an amateur free agent by the Atlanta Braves in 2000, spent parts of seven seasons in the major leagues as a third baseman and first baseman for the Braves, Cleveland Indians and Arizona Diamondbacks. The 33-year-old Villa Tapia, Dominican Republic native left the MLB after the 2014 season but has two very successful seasons in the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) in 2015 and 2016.

This is so very sad. Every time I hear about these accidents, my heart automatically goes back to a contemporary of mine, Bruce Heinbechner with the Angels. As oldbrooklynfan, said my condolences to the Ventura and Marte family & friends, and may they both RIP!!
