Time to Get Ready For The Inevitable

No one wants to think it, let alone say it – at least not publically or in print – but the 2020 Major League Baseball season is not going to happen.

How can it?

With the entire country in social-distancing / self-quarantined lockdown and with the number of confirmed cases of the extremely contagious COVID-19 coronavirus continuing to soar in the U.S. having hit the 100,000-mark with nearly 1,600 confirmed deaths as of Friday evening (with no indication whatsoever that it is slowing down), it goes beyond all reason and common sense to honestly believe that the 2020 MLB season – or that of any other professional or amateur sport – is going to happen. Sorry, baseball fans, but that’s the cold, hard truth.

The inevitable announcement is coming.

What we are beginning to see more of now are respected sports writers, journalists, and reporters including things like ‘if there is a 2020 season’ in their writings, reportings and on social media.

“No one knows when the Major League Baseball season will start this year, or if it is played at all,” USA Today‘s Bob Nightengale wrote on Friday. “If there is a season, there’s no telling whether games will be played in front of fans, in empty stadiums or at neutral sites.”

Although it has been widely reported that a vaccine to combat the deadly virus is currently being tested and showing positive results, the time it would take to mass-produce it and administer it to a U.S. population of over 331 million people will – absolutely will – take longer than May 1, June 1 or even December 1 of this year, let alone next year.

“I don’t think anybody can say anything with certainty right now about anything,” Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said during a video interview on Friday.

There are few people more confident and optimistic than Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, yet even he is beginning to show concern that there will be no 2020 baseball season. (Video capture courtesy of LA Dodgers)

As much as no one wants to think it, let alone say it, at least not publically or in print, it is time to prepare ourselves for MLB commissioner Rob Manfred’s inevitable announcement that there will be no baseball in 2020.

Sorry, my friends

  1. I would say that it is correct to think, at this moment, that there will be no baseball season this year. If, by some chance, that we actually do have one, it will be very surprising.

  2. Uncle Ned says:

Not a chance of baseball this year.

If the world survives in any form resembling the past, I’ll wager that Mookie Betts signs a one year deal to play for the Dodgers in 2021.

I have to hope that in some way baseball could be played without fans. It would bring some normalcy back to the country, give us something to rally around (unless your a giant fan). If players (and their families) are tested and quarantined together, it should be safe for them (hey, they are quarantined anyway, they would just be in a larger community). This would be costly for owners, but they would own tv ratings with tv/sports/entertainment coming to a standstill.

Without a baseball season what happens to all the contracts?
This is going to be crazy.
